Somatic Movement Therapy

One of the realities of being human is experiencing moments of distress and discomfort. At times we can feel overwhelmed, panicked, and anxious, with our heart pounding and thoughts racing, unable to calm down. Or we can feel so low and depressed that we can’t find the motivation for even the simplest of tasks. We can feel as though we have become stuck in these emotional and physical states. This is especially true if we have experienced trauma. Fortunately, we can learn strategies and tools to interrupt these old patterns and develop more supportive and regulated ways of being.

The word soma, from the Greek somatikos, refers to the living body and our felt sense of self, as experienced from the inside. In somatic practices, we use our awareness of our internal experience as a source of insight, understanding, and healing. Somatic movement therapy incorporates the practice of attending to physical sensations and emotions as they arise in our body in the present moment. As we learn to listen to our bodies through tracking feelings and sensation, we are able to build body awareness and the agency to develop new resources to create positive change, wellness, and vitality. Grounded in our lived experience, somatic movement therapy supports the integration of body, mind, emotion, and spirit.

Expressive Arts Therapy

Expressive arts therapy uses various art modalities together in an integrative way to foster personal insight, growth, and healing.

When we engage in the creative art process, we can explore our inner world in abstract, figurative, and non-linear ways. Through creative expression, we can bring forth our inner stories and have an opportunity to gain understanding, make new meaning of our experience, and heal old wounds.

My work is grounded in the Tamalpa Life/Art Process; a movement-based expressive arts approach to accessing the wisdom of the body and the transformative power of the imagination. Using movement, drawing, creative writing, and improvisation, we explore the memories, strengths, challenges, limitations, and possibilities housed in the body. Through “art enactments” we can try on, grapple, play with, and embody the change we wish to become. As a witness, I come from a grounded place of curiosity, encouraging your artistic and therapeutic explorations without judgment, diagnosis, or interpretation. This type of art-making is about the process, and staying open to the possibilities of what can be, and following your inner sense of knowing.
